What is a Heisman Worth?

What is a Heisman Trophy worth?   The Heisman trophy was awarded this weekend to the best overall football player in the 2013 football season.  Jameis Winston Quarterback from Florida State was the winner.  Jameis Winston becomes the youngest player to receive the award, he received 2,205 points. Alabama Quarterback A.J. McCarron came in second place with 704 points, creating the fifth-largest margin of victory in the modern Heisman era, despite Winston being left off 115 ballots. His 668 first-place votes are 9th all time.

Jameis Winston was accused of raping a coed in December of 2o12.   However, The Florida State's Attorney announced on December 5th, 2013 that Winston would not be charged and the case was closed.   That opened the door for Winston to high step to podium to pick up the Heisman Trophy.  Winston becomes the third Florida State player to win the Heisman Trophy.   Charlie Ward won it in 1993, and Chris Weinke in 2000.

So, it really causes me pause.   Lets take a look back at a  few of the most recent Heisman Trophy Winners and what it has meant to them and their universities.

Cam Newton was the 2010 winner a Quarterback at University of Auburn.  Cam Newton's father Cecil was accused of shopping his son's services to the highest bidder.   It was alleged that Cecil told Auburn that Mississippi State had offered to pay $180,000 for his son to attend Mississippi State.  Yet, somehow and miraculously Newton ends up playing for The University of Auburn Tigers, which is another SEC school within the same division.  Do we really think he went there for free?   Newton won the trophy because he was reported as not having any knowledge of what his father was doing behind the scenes as his pseudo agent.   An interesting loophole.   In 2010 Cam Newton went on to win a National Championship title for Auburn and ultimately won the Heisman Trophy.

In 2011 Robert Griffin III, won the Heisman Trophy.   This was the first Heisman Trophy for the University of Baylor.   And what has it meant for the university and institution?   Well, Baylor has broken ground on a brand new $250 million dollar state of the art football stadium.   They aren't paying for said stadium with government funds folks.  Griffin helped Baylor win their first Big XII conference title.   Since then Baylor has become a top tier football power.   Until that point Baylor had been a doormat in the Big XII conference and since then has vaulted themselves to the top of the Big XII and a consistent title contender.

In 2012 Johnny Manziel aka "Johnny Football" won the Heisman Trophy for Texas A&M.   It was reported that Texas A&M donations increased by $750 million dollars during 2013.   Yes, there is serious money at stake for winning a Heisman Trophy.  During the 2013 off-season Johnny Manziel was accused of selling autographs for money which is a NCAA violation that they take semi-seriously.   Manziel and A&M contacted and hired the same law firm that represented Cam Newton during his alleged off-field distraction.   All I can say is smart.   Manziel only faced a self (Texas A&M) imposed half game suspension against Rice.   A game they should have won with their third string quarterback.   And Texas A&M went to win the game 52-31.

This leads us to 2013 and the Heisman Winner Jameis Winston.   Jameis Winston was in my opinion the best football player in 2013.   Winston led his team to the only undefeated record in College Football.  He looked like a man among boys and I believe he has a very bright future as a professional quarterback in the NFL, in the same light as Ben Rothlesberger.  Yes Rothlesberger is a supreme talent but has also had off the field issues with the ladies.    Would I have voted for him.  I don't know.

Jameis Winston's accuser's attorney is asking the Attorney General's Office to review the case.  Without going into all of the details, the accuser has a spotty memory of the events on the evening of the incident which is consistent with symptoms of having taken the date rape drug.  The investigating Detective reportedly said, "Tallahassee was a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against [Winston] because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable."  The Attorney General's office found there wasn't sufficient evidence to prosecute and proceed with the case, saving the Florida Tax player this money that could potential be used to update their voter machines.   Just kidding of course, but in recent years Florida just continues to face controversies.

I believe it is a win for Jameis Winston and Florida State University, but a loss for college football and a big loss for this college football fan.   College Football my favorite sport keeps having controversy after controversy and that is simply because there is so much money at stake for Universities, Coaches, Players, and Agents.   I expect the worst to continue to be lurking around the corner of every season.

Yes there is a Santa Claus W. Virginia

Thank You Santa!
Iowa State Wins 52-44.  I didn't actually catch the game because, I was traveling back to Minnesota after my annual Thanksgiving visit to Iowa.   I had intentionally planned to leave my parents house at 2:00 so I could pick up the game on the radio on my way home.   I was thinking I could listen to the game to help pass the time.   I was able to pick up the game and I began listening to it, until the middle of the 1st quarter.   I listened right up to the point where we were down 17-0, and this was after two back to back turnovers after three Iowa State plays.

However, I'm not totally a fair weather fan.   When we stopped in Mason City for a Bio-break, I checked the score.   It was 21=38 with 14:xx to go in the fourth quarter.   Needless to say I was deflated.

Later during our drive my wife Mary says, "we are tied and in our third overtime."
I was all like, "What????"
I was trying to find the game and then decided not to jinks it.   Thank goodness for DVR.   Therefore, I'm breaking down the film this morning.  This was one of the things on my Christmas list, thank you so much Santa Claus.

Cyclones Beat Kansas 34-0, but I've kind of already moved on to football.   I'm sure I'll have West Virginia preview later this week.  Kansas beat West Virginia, but that was a home game for the Jayhawks.

Jayhawks of Kansas.

Billy Gardell from Mike and Molly
Or Charlie Weis
Really Like that guy?

Kansas Running back James Sims earned Big 12 co-offensive player of the week honors alongside Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty last week against West Virginia.  Sims set a career high with 211 rushing yards, and he scored three touchdowns during a 31-19 win over West Virginia (who is Iowa State's next opponent).   This isn't great news because the Iowa State run defense or defense in general has not been a strength for the Cyclones.   I expect some big plays Saturday for Kansas.   Yes Iowa State is favored in the this game.   Somebody must be drinking on the job.

Who Ordered the Smedium?
On a positive note, "Fish Sticks" The Iowa State punter Kirby Van Der Kamp was invited to participate in the 2014 Senior Bowl, an all-star game played annually in Mobile, Ala., for football players who have completed their eligibility.  Van Der Kamp has been a serious weapon for Iowa State over the last few years.  We wish him the best.   When you punt for for a team like Iowa State you have plenty of opportunity to display your skills.  Great job.

And a Shout out to Tyler Haws "Beavis" from BYU, Butthead.

I'm just Sayin" ! ! !

I'm Just Sayin'

Big Win over Michigan.   But, now we have a road test against The BYU Fighting Morons, er Mormons.   I mean The Fighting COUGARS.   Iowa State jumps to a 21st ranking in the poles and BYU gets two votes.   Let's assume those writers are from Provost, UT and Salt Lake City, UT.    The Cougars (and not the good kind of Cougars), are currently 4-0.  Tyler Haws the 6-5 junior leads the Cougar attack and averages 29 points a game and 10 rebounds.  Haws has been out the last two games, but after watcing ISU/Michigan game film I would guess Haws is back on the court on Wednesday.   Currently through the first 4 games the Cougs are averaging 100.3 points per game.  This will be no easy test for Freddie and the Cyclones, this one has me more scared than Michigan.  I can't wait for Wednesday night.

Oh Yea Baby.

ISU 77, UM 70. No. 7 team falls in Ames.

Sports Talk With The Commish.

Commissioner: We have our old friend Terri from Ames on today.

Terri from Ames: Hey Commish, do you know if Bobby Stoops Oklahoma's Head Coach is single?   I think he is just dreamy, I would love to grab a hunk of that man meat.

Commissioner:  WRONG! Although I'm sure you are a vegan, it sounds as though you may be suffering from the Meat Sweats.  I will give you this, I have searched the last three years for pictures of Bobby Stoops in funny or compromising poses.   I just can't find any.   My favorite Bobby Stoops story.   When I was just a pup listening to the Iowa Squaks - Bobby played Defensive Back for the Iowa Squakeyes, and while playing Michigan State, they had the old style wooden goal posts.   Bobby during defensive coverage, ran into the goal posts, and knocked them over.  Classic Bobby.
For Netten not the kicker

Terri from Ames: How would you currently rank the Iowa State defensive backs?

Commissioner: WRONG!  Here is how I would currently rank our defensive backs compared to the other defensive backs in the NCAA.

1. Kenneth Acker, Southern Methodist
2. Ricardo Allen , Purdue
189. Uncle Rico, Napoleon Dynamite
692. Rabbi Yerachum, Jewish Flag League
4005-4009. Any of the Iowa State Defensive Backs

Terri from Ames: How do you think the Cyclone Women's Basketball Team will do this year?
No You Da Man

Commissioner:  WRONG!  I quite honestly would rather spend time planning my winter color pallet.  Go back to needle point while tuning into Iowa State Woman's Basketball.  I would like some Cardinal and Gold ear muffs for Christmas.

Terri from Ames: What do you think are our chances against #7 Michigan in basketball Sunday?

Commissioner: WRONG!  I think we can play with anybody in the country.  We proved that against Kentucky and Ohio State during the NCAA Tourney the last two years.   It doesn't matter if Melvin Egim is currently injured.   Fred Hoiberg doesn't rebuild he reloads. By reload I mean the good kind in terms of basketball recruiting, Meat Sweats.
