Big Win over Michigan.   But, now we have a road test against The BYU Fighting Morons, er Mormons.   I mean The Fighting COUGARS.   Iowa State jumps to a 21st ranking in the poles and BYU gets two votes.   Let's assume those writers are from Provost, UT and Salt Lake City, UT.    The Cougars (and not the good kind of Cougars), are currently 4-0.  Tyler Haws the 6-5 junior leads the Cougar attack and averages 29 points a game and 10 rebounds.  Haws has been out the last two games, but after watcing ISU/Michigan game film I would guess Haws is back on the court on Wednesday.   Currently through the first 4 games the Cougs are averaging 100.3 points per game.  This will be no easy test for Freddie and the Cyclones, this one has me more scared than Michigan.  I can't wait for Wednesday night.

Terri from Ames: Hey Commish, do you know if Bobby Stoops Oklahoma's Head Coach is single?   I think he is just dreamy, I would love to grab a hunk of that man meat.



Commissioner:  WRONG! Although I'm sure you are a vegan, it sounds as though you may be suffering from the Meat Sweats.  I will give you this, I have searched the last three years for pictures of Bobby Stoops in funny or compromising poses.   I just can't find any.   My favorite Bobby Stoops story.   When I was just a pup listening to the Iowa Squaks - Bobby played Defensive Back for the Iowa Squakeyes, and while playing Michigan State, they had the old style wooden goal posts.   Bobby during defensive coverage, ran into the goal posts, and knocked them over.  Classic Bobby.

Commissioner:  WRONG!  I quite honestly would rather spend time planning my winter color pallet.  Go back to needle point while tuning into Iowa State Woman's Basketball.  I would like some Cardinal and Gold ear muffs for Christmas.  

Terri from Ames: What do you think are our chances against #7 Michigan in basketball Sunday? 

Commissioner: WRONG!  I think we can play with anybody in the country.  We proved that against Kentucky and Ohio State during the NCAA Tourney the last two years.   It doesn't matter if Melvin Egim is currently injured.   Fred Hoiberg doesn't rebuild he reloads. By reload I mean the good kind in terms of basketball recruiting, Meat Sweats.

My Thoughts on the rest of the Season

 Iowa State (1-8) at (22) Oklahoma (7-2)

This one doesn't look close.   Althought the Sooners will not win the conference since they lost last week to the first place Baylor Bears. Overall, the Sooners own a 69-5-2 all-time advantage vs. the Cyclones. Oklahoma has won 14 straight meetings between the two schools, including an 8-0 record under head coach Bob Stoops.

On Paper this one looks to be equal.   However, put a paper bag over my head.  Because I'm a Cyclone fan and the Cyclones do not have a defense.  The Cyclones still rank at the bottom of all BCS eligible football teams. ISU can't stop a blood nose - which is what we are likely to have after Saturday.  

As beat up and injury prone as the Cyclones are right now the TCU Horned Frogs aren't much better.  They too have felt the pain of playing in a deep Big XII conference almost as much as the Cyclones have from an injury standpoint.   However, I would place my wager on the black uniforms of the TCU Horned Frogs.

* Conference Games 2014 Football Season

From the news wire this week the Big XII released the schedule for the 2014 football season.  Even though Iowa State is really moving into the easy part of their 2013 schedule - I would predict a possibly 1-2 win season in 2013.   This could be worse than the last year with McCarney, and the two black years with Chizik.  Looking into 2014 the schedule doesn't get easier and the optimism is running slim with this FANaddict.   The Big XII is a difficult conference and all of the momentum we built up last year, it popped like a helium balloon over a hot stove.  

Which leads me to ask how long does Paul Rhoads have?   That's right Terri from Ames, I'm starting to question your Boyee.  Next year I see the Cyclones only having 1 win going into November (sound familiar).  So, I have really two questions.   Can we continue to run the current offense we run?   I'm concerned about our ability to run this injury prone offense with our current depth.   We haven't done much offensively since Tom Herman left to join the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Secondly, do we give Rhoads the opportunity to see the Sam Richardson project through to completion of his senior season?

2013 saw good attendance early in the season.  I expect the fan turnout to slid back toward historic rates.  I would also suggest that we look very closely at the first game of the season in 2014.  North Dakota State is not a slack program.   Last year they knocked off the Minnesota Golden Gophers and this year they knocked off the Kansas State Wildcats who just gave us a noogie, a wedgy, and said we'll do it again next year. Perhaps we should invite the North Dakota State coach over to the athletic directors house for some post game conversation, or keep him on the speed dial

The B Team

The B-Team

This is what you get after playing 4 top 20 teams in a row (Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, and Oklahoma State).   Typically you play one top 20 team and you call that an Ice Pack Game.  4 in a row and you end up with the B-Team.  This week Iowa State could be without their starting Quarterback, their starting running back, and one of their starting linebackers (for the season).   

Kansas State isn't a top 20 team this year.   They are 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big XII.   Not the same team they were last year.   This is what they call a rebuilding year in Manhattan.   Kansas State has owned Iowa State over the past five years.   Kansas State is on a 5 game winning streak against the Cyclones and looking to make it six in a row against ISU.   Although over those five game they have won those games by an average of 5.8 points.   So nearly all of those games have come down to a touchdown on less.  Including last year when they did have a Top 20 ranked team. 

I would project that Iowa State falls behind early.   Then Iowa State pulls back to make it a game and give us some hope, and then Kansas State pulls away in the third to fourth quarter.   If Iowa State has execution issues such as turnovers, I would expect Kansas State to step on our throats and not let us back up.   In other words, they will run up the score and not lose any sleep over it all.   Bill Snyder was on Hayden Fry's coaching staff back in the 80's so there is still no love loss between the programs of Iowa State and Kansas State. 

On the offensive side Quenton Bundrage, currently has 6 touchdown catches.   The all-time record for touchdown catches in a single season is Todd Blythe with 9 and he did that two years in a row.   So, although Iowa State's Offense has sputtered at times Bundrage is quietly marching toward the record books.   We'll need Bundrage to continue to pull in touchdown grabs and for our Quarterback (Rohach,or Richardson) to spread the ball around. 

On the defensive side we are in deep doo doo.  I read one article that had Iowa State ranked as the lowest ranked defense of any BCS School.  Last week Oklahoma State's Roland ran for a career-high 219 yards and four touchdowns. I would certainly expect Bill Snyder and the Wildcats to copy the same blueprint and run the ball.   Kansas State has developed a balanced offense between pass and run.   But, expect the Wildcats to be run heavy this Saturday. 

The Cyclones currently rank at the bottom of the Big 12 in rushing defense, allowing nearly 220 yards per game on the ground. When Iowa State heads to Manhattan, Kansas State’s rushing offense will be waiting, ranking No. 4 in the Big 12 at 180 yards per game.   Good recipe for Bad Mojo.
